The Emerald Mile by Kevin Fedarko

The Emerald Mile is the story of a small wooden dory that rode the crest of the largest flood on the Colorado River in living memory and set the record for the fastest boat in history through the Grand Canyon. In addition to chronicling the trails of the three river guides who launched that rather hair-brained quest, the story also follows a team of beleaguered engineers who were tasked with saving the Glen Canyon Dam. In essence, it's an adventure tale that lays out the history of the river and the canyon while opening a window on the violent and sublime world of whitewater and wooden boats on the Colorado.
